The theory behind the lipstick effect is based on the assumption that consumers do not stop buying luxury goods even in times of crisis, only they are usually less expensive products. It is claimed that lipstick sales increase significantly in times when consumer confidence in the economy dwindles. However, there is no clear evidence for this thesis.

The fact that sales of decorative cosmetics and especially lip products are rising again despite inflation suggests that the aforementioned effect has returned. But perhaps the increased demand is also a combination of the lipstick effect and the natural recovery after the pandemic.

In conventional rinse-off products, sodium lauryl ether sulphate (INCI: SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE, or SLES for short) is often used as a primary surfactant. When selecting the raw material, the content of 1,4-dioxane must be considered more closely. This by-product is produced during the manufacture of such surfactants and should be kept as low as possible due to the suspected carcinogenic effect.

KLK Tensachem has more than 30 years of experience in the production of ether sulphates, which are used not only in personal care products but also in household cleaning agents. Since the formation of 1,4-dioxane is unavoidable even under optimal production conditions, KLK Tensachem has introduced advanced technologies that can almost completely remove this by-product from the SLES. Through a modern two-stage vacuum neutralisation, the 1,4-dioxane content in the ether sulphate is reduced to a minimum.

These products are made from natural fatty alcohols and are characterised by high quality. They meet the increasingly strict specifications for the content of 1,4-dioxane in the respective formulations, which are already regulated by law in the USA.
