Adansonia digitata (Baobab) is a majestic tree revered in Africa for its medicinal and nutritional value. It is widely distributed throughout sub-Saharan Africa and the Limpopo province of South Africa. The fruit of the Baobab tree is a large egg shaped fruit covered with protective velvety hair and can reach up to 12cm long.

Traditional Use

In African communities, the baobab fruit is commonly referred to as the ‘super-fruit’ based on its rich nutritional profile. Rich in vitamins and minerals, the baobab fruit provides a healthy supplement for children. In some African countries, a paste made from the fruit pulp is applied to swollen joints as an anti-inflammatory agent. It is also used to treat fevers and to stimulate the immune system. The fruits are browsed by a wide range of African wildlife and form an important snack for the African elephant.

Bao-Active C is intended for cosmetic applications for use as an emollient and cell nutrition enhancer to promote soft smooth skin. It works by supplying the skin with essential vitamins and minerals and protects the skin from harmful radiation. The rich cocktail of vitamins, amino acids, critical anti-oxidants and minerals provides the skin with vital nutrition for maintaining youthful radiance.

The high levels of Vitamin C in baobab fruit provide a natural way to treat and prevent skin wrinkles associated with photo-ageing. Studies have shown that the bioavailability of Vitamin C in the skin is inadequate when it is administered orally, therefore the use of topical ascorbic acid is favoured in the practice of dermatology. Provided that the pH range is correctly maintained, the Vitamin C in this extract remains stable. Clinical studies have shown that the topical use of Vitamin C increases collagen production in young as well as older human skin.

Vitamin A, also known as Retinol, is effective in rebuilding collagen to fight wrinkles and fade dark spots caused by sun damage. Bao-Active C is essential for rejuvenation and cell renewal.
